Combining scientific excellence with industrial application is exactly what Lukas Fräger has achieved. Our Head of Electronics Development has successfully completed his industrial doctorate on the topic “Modeling and Optimization of Power Electronic Converters Based on Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors” while simultaneously managing his demanding leadership role within our company.

To mark this special milestone, our management team personally congratulated Lukas and recognized this outstanding achievement. Together with the team, they celebrated the occasion with gifts, and his colleagues did not miss the opportunity to place a custom-designed doctoral cap on Lukas.

Originally from Hameln, Lukas Fräger gained international experience early on during a year abroad in Pittsburgh, USA. He later studied electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University, where he earned his Master of Science degree. His doctoral research was conducted in cooperation with Professor Jens Friebe from Leibniz University Hannover and the University of Kassel.

At the core of his dissertation is a highly relevant topic: increasing the efficiency of modern power electronic systems, particularly multi-level power supply concepts, in the course of ongoing electrification. As part of his research, Lukas Fräger developed an innovative approach for the combined modeling of power losses and thermal behavior. The resulting model is not only precise and flexible, but also highly computationally efficient, enabling even real-time applications on microcontrollers.

This allows power losses to be minimized while achieving higher output power within thermal limits. Another focus of the doctoral thesis is the dynamic adjustment of operating parameters and the intelligent distribution of losses to further enhance system performance during operation.

The research findings provide valuable impulses for industrial applications, particularly in the areas of efficiency optimization, reduction of power losses, increased power density, and transient thermal and electrical modeling.

Lukas Fräger has been part of our Development Center since 2018 and has headed Electronics Development since 2021. Together with his team, he develops hardware and embedded software solutions for power supplies, electronic circuit breakers, UPS systems, and advanced power electronics concepts. In addition, he regularly publishes scientific papers, including presentations at the international PCIM trade fair.
