One of the many ways the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) can be deployed is to provide emergency power using mobile generators, for example to critical infrastructure. THW electrical specialists must consider different power system configurations and protective measures between the generator and the facility being supplied. This is essential to ensure that power can be supplied safely. For this purpose, BLOCK provided the THW local chapter in Siegen with a three-phase 25 kVA isolating transformer through its support association, Verein zur Unterstützung des Technischen Hilfswerk Siegerland e.V.

The BLOCK TT3 25-4-4 transformer allows a generator using protective electrical separation to supply a building with a TN system without altering the building’s existing protective measures. Other applications are also possible. At sites with long cable runs between the generator and the load, such as in a tunnel, adjusting the output voltage can compensate for voltage drop and ensure that connected equipment continues to operate properly. The fully rated neutral point and Dyn5 vector group also help compensate for single-phase load imbalances, which is particularly beneficial when generators are used.

WELL PREPARED

For mobile use, volunteers from the local chapter integrated the transformer into a custom-built power distribution unit and equipped it with 32 A CEE connections. By providing the transformer, BLOCK supports the important work of THW and helps create realistic training conditions for demanding emergency situations, ensuring that response teams are as well prepared as possible for these scenarios.

„With the BLOCK isolating transformer, we can train under realistic conditions to handle the specific requirements of different power system configurations and protective measures and prepare our emergency response teams for a wide range of situations. As the first successful trials during training have shown, the transformer can also be used in a variety of real-world scenarios, making it ideally suited to our needs.“
